Kieran Osborne

DevOps · Cloud · Infrastructure Engineer

Infrastructure and technical operations engineer with 10+ years of experience across Linux systems, cloud infrastructure, web platforms, automation, security and technical support.

I work across the gap between infrastructure, development and operations — managing production systems, automating deployments, solving difficult technical problems and occasionally building the tooling I wish already existed.

Experience

Infrastructure with a wide blast radius.

My current role spans cloud services, Linux, production web platforms, CI/CD, information security and internal IT across a large Drupal estate.

Adaptive · 2022–Present

Infrastructure / DevOps Engineer

I support and improve the systems behind developers, staff and client websites, with work ranging from AWS and Cloudflare to deployment automation, monitoring and ISMS security controls.

Infrastructure & Cloud

AWS EC2 and S3, AWS-to-site VPNs, Cloudflare, DNS, Tailscale, Ubuntu services and internal office infrastructure.

Automation & Delivery

GitHub Actions, Pantheon Terminus, Composer, Ansible, Semaphore, Playwright and Nightwatch across deployment and maintenance workflows.

Security & ISMS

System inspections, vulnerability scanning, access reviews, patch compliance, evidence gathering and remediation supporting ISO certification.

Platform Operations

Pantheon, Acquia, OpenSolr, Drupal migrations, backups, monitoring, deployments, Linux desktop support and production troubleshooting.

Automation examples: Drupal builds and Pantheon deployments with Composer/Terminus; post-deployment Playwright testing; SonarQube quality and security checks; and Pantheon data pipelines into AWS S3 for Looker Studio hosting reports.

Selected Projects

I tend to build the tool I want to use.

Independent infrastructure and software projects shaped by problems encountered in real technical operations work.

InfraBeacon

A website and server monitoring platform I designed and built using PHP and PostgreSQL. Queue-based scheduling dispatches monitoring tasks to distributed Ubuntu worker servers.

Production hosting infrastructure

KOServer

An independent managed hosting environment supporting around 20 websites and applications. Built around Ubuntu, Apache, Traefik, Cloudflare, automated backups and monitoring.

Homelab & automation

Infrastructure without the change-control meetings.

Local and remote Proxmox infrastructure, multi-gigabit connectivity, extensive wired and PoE networking, Linux services and automation.

Away from the terminal. Sort of.

The greenhouse got slightly out of hand.

What started as growing a few plants became a network-connected greenhouse with environmental monitoring and automation.

Live hobby infrastructure

Because apparently tomatoes need infrastructure too.

Home Assistant brings together ESP32 hardware, MQTT sensors, PoE-connected equipment and automation rules to monitor and control the growing environment.

Tools I actually work with.

No percentage bars. Just technologies I have used professionally or operate in my own infrastructure.

How I Work

Useful engineering beats impressive-looking engineering.

Solve the actual problem

I prefer understanding why something is failing rather than simply working around the symptoms.

Automate repetition

If a predictable task happens regularly, I will usually start wondering why a human is still doing it.

Keep it maintainable

The most technically impressive solution is not always the best operational one. Reliability, simplicity and maintenance cost matter.

Independent Services

Need technical help rather than an engineer?

Alongside my professional career, I provide selected website, hosting and IT services to a small number of clients outside my normal working hours.

Websites & Support

Practical website builds, ongoing updates and troubleshooting for small businesses.

Managed Hosting

Hosting, monitoring, backups, domains, DNS and the technical work behind keeping sites available.

Email & IT

Business email, devices, DNS and straightforward technical support without agency overhead.

KOServer

My independent hosting platform for websites and applications that need managed infrastructure.

About

I like the awkward problems between job descriptions.

I'm Kieran, an infrastructure and DevOps engineer based in the West Midlands. I've worked professionally in IT for more than a decade, starting in hosting and technical support before moving through systems support, software development, infrastructure and DevOps.

I tend to gravitate towards infrastructure that needs fixing, deployment processes that need automating, monitoring that is not telling us enough, or an internal tool that does not exist yet.

Outside work, that tendency does not particularly switch off. I operate my own hosting infrastructure, build tools such as InfraBeacon and NerdTools, run an unnecessarily capable homelab and have somehow applied infrastructure automation principles to growing tomatoes.
